Main Page - Last Updated: March 26, 2011   Checksum... OK

Welcome to my humble portfolio website.   My name is Nikolai Ivan Mohilchock, and I have been a designer working in the video game industry for nearly six years.   I specialize in single-player level design for the first-person shooter genre, using cutting-edge technology from studios such as Id Software, Epic Games, and Monolith Productions.

  • Update: March 26, 2011 - My first update of the new year!   I've relocated to Los Angeles, CA to work at The Workshop on their first game: "Sorcery".   The studio is comprised of several former Treyarch employess, including founder Peter Akemann, Chris Busse, and a number of other great people.   I'm working on an ambitious and amazing project that I'm proud to be associated with, and I look forward to seeing on shelves this holidy.   Although I can't say much about the project, it is definitely a good reason to own a PS3 Move (and if you know me, that's a big statement).   What little media is available on the net doesn't do this game justice, and I'm really excited to be a part of it.

I will have a page online in the coming weeks to touch on some of the work I did while working for Ignition Entertainment.   I can't disclose much information, but we had some extremely impressive tech, and a great game that we were all proud of toward the end.   You know how the old saying goes... "great works of art are never finished, they are only abandoned."

  • Update: November 5, 2010 - It is my sad duty to inform everyone that UTV Ignition Florida has closed it's doors and laid off more than 40 people, allowing some to relocate to Austin, Texas.   I will unfortunately not be joining them, as the publisher has decided to take the game in another direction.   So, I shall be working on smaller projects at home for the time being.

This isn't all bad news, however.   I finally have time to work on finishing my first single-player Gears of War level.   As I begin to finish the level, I'll be putting together a lengthy write-up of the process, mistakes I made, and what I learned from it all.

I'm finally at the stage where I can put it out there and have some people test it out and get some feedback.   You can download my work-in-progress by clicking here, and instructions for installation and running the level are included in the readme file.   The file is about 90 MB right now, and you can look forward to improvements as soon as I get feedback from players willing to try it out.   Look for updates on this page for when a new version goes live.   Once the map is finished, I'll add it to the Downloads page, so in the mean time this is the only way you'll get a hold of it for now.

If you like what you see and want to send me your comments - or run into problems and need help - send me an e-mail: Nick [at] Mohilchock.com.

  • Update: August 1, 2010 - It's been kind of slow, so here is an update to let everyone know where I am on various projects:

I've updated the website, fixed an error or two and added a new page - the Trinity section is now back and it's live.   For those that remember, Trinity is the un-released game I first worked on before working on Call of Duty: U.O., using the Quake III Engine.   Ah, the memories.

Since moving to Florida, I've been working with UTV Ignition on creating a new I.P. ("Intellectual Property") to be announced the end of this year and release in 2011.   Unfortunately I can't talk about it yet or the role I have been taking on the project, but I'm confident that it will be a really good game.

I am still working on my first single-player Gears of War level in my free time.   It's in what I would consider a pre-alpha state, and it won't be available on the Downloads page until it is fairly unbreakable and easy to play.   However, if you have Gears of War for the PC and are itching to get a sneak peek of the level and send me feedback, I'll post a link to download it in a future update.   And of course, I'll update the Unreal Engine 3 page with a short write-up of the process I went through making the level and what I learned.   Let me know if you're interested and send me an e-mail: Nick [at] Mohilchock.com.

  • Update: April 4, 2010 - I've been working on a single-player Gears of War level the past couple weeks, it's been a lot of fun and a good learning experience.   In anticipation of potentially releasing it to the public soon, I've updated the Unreal Engine 3 page with a short write-up of the process I went through making DM-Orechasm, including UT Unlimited's Review of the map.   You can also grab the map from the Downloads page.   As always, check it out and tell me what you think!   Nick [at] Mohilchock.com.

  • Update: December 23rd, 2009 - As an early Christmas present for me; one of my favorite Quake 3 levels has been selected for the 10th Anniversary Map Packs on the world famous ..::LvL website.   My level Burning Reminders has been chosen as one of the top 10 clan arena maps of the decade, and I'm in good company.   Many of my friends were also honored with 10-year Anniversary selections in other categories, including Sock (FFA - "Pyramid of the Magician" & CTF - "La Bastille"), unitool (1v1 - "Dumb All Over"), 79DieselRabbit (CTF - "Frozen Colors"), and Hal9000 (CTF - "Mostly Harmless").   You can find all the 10th Anniversary map packs on the front page of the ..::LvL website, and the map pack I was chosen for can be downloaded here.   As always, send your questions and comments to Nick [at] Mohilchock.com.   Have a great holiday and a fantastic New Year!
